Our protagonist here is a young man, who is thrown out of his home by his father and starts wandering the world, with nothing but his violine and an appreciation for nature and folklore to pass the time.
Eichendorff uses a lot of romantic tropes, such as the artist as bon vivant and misunderstood genius, and even incorporates a lot of popular folksongs into the narrative.

There is maybe something that is lost in translation as I cannot read Germanbut I guess this would not have been a classic if this is no longer read by the current generations in Germany so vitq must be something lovable about the whole thing.
